Pool Water Purification for Swimming Pools
Utilizing Electrolyzed Oxidizing Water technology for pool water purification in swimming pools
Introduction
This technology was invented by the Russian scientist in 1974 and has been used in the disinfection of drinking water and swimming pool water in the world since 2000. Early generators were very large and complicated and occupied more space compared to modern generators. Today’s generators produce Anolyte at neutral pH and the produced materials have a longer storage capacity (4-6 months).
The basis of electrochemical activities
The conversion of salt solution by electric current separated into following two materials:
- Anolyte
- Catholyte

Mechanism of Effect
Anolyte is a set of strong oxidizers including chlorine compounds: especially hypochlorous acid, O. and ozone.
The disinfection properties of Anolyte in water, depends on oxidation power of its oxygen atoms and chlorine substitution reaction. It should be noted that the oxygen atom itself is a strong disinfectant.
In nature, the cell walls of microorganisms have a negative electrical charge, so HOCL is more due to the presence of a neutral electrical charge and penetrates the cell wall at a faster rate than the ¯OCL ion. HOCL is more reactive than ¯OCL and will be between 80 and 100% more accurate.
HOCL can penetrate into the protective layers of the cell wall of microorganisms and has enough effect to removal and destruction of microorganisms and rather than other chemical products, it is environment-friendly.
No irritation, burning and sensitivity in the respiratory tracts
Anolyte is a non-toxic disinfectant whose purpose is the health and safety of the operator and end-users and swimmers.
The use of Anolyte in swimming pools is harmless and doesn’t cause any irritation on skin, eye or nose and has the ability to destroy bacteria, viruses and even legionella.
The physicochemical properties of Anolyte solution are as follows:
- FAC: 500 ppm
- PH: Neutral
- ORP: 800-900 millivolts
No smell of chlorine will be in the pool water during disinfection with anolyte, there will be no unpleasant smell of chlorine in the pool water due to the absence of CL2.
Injection
Anolyte must be injected into the pool water cyclically, which depends on the water circulation speed, pool water volume, whether it is indoor or outdoor, ambient temperature and wind speed (in outdoor pools).
Therefore, it is better to install an analyzer in the pool environment to determine the amount of active chlorine, ORP and remained chlorine concentration or ORP in the pool water is controlled by a smart analyzer.
Anolyte is usually injected into the running water of swimming pools by a dosing pump.
Safety of Anolyte
- No danger of chlorine gas cylinder explosion and related risks
- Production of disinfectant solution with neutral pH and no corrosion problems for pipelines, equipment and surfaces
- No emission of toxic gases and no sensitivity and irritation in the eyes, skin and respiratory tracts of swimmers
- The safety of using technology, unlike ozone gas, which rather causes serious problems in the lungs and respiratory system.
Advantages of EOW technology of Anolyte compared to other disinfection methods
- Ability to produce on-site with a fully automatic system
- Ability to monitor the amount of residual chlorine and the ORP index continuously and online
- Using the raw materials of water and salt, which reduce the costs of purchase, transportation and storage.
- It has the advantages of both chlorine and ozone disinfection methods. (Power of ozone effect, need for lower chlorine dose and more suitable chlorine residual)
- Reducing the turbidity of pool water
- Removing biofilm in pipelines and cleaning the filtration system from biofilms and preventing secondary contamination of water filters and biofilm formation
- Anolyte prevents the deposition of biofilm before sticking to the wall of the pipelines, and there is no need to separate parts for cleaning, unlike other methods.
- No causing problem of coagulation and clogging in the injection system
- Short and quick contact time (1-2 minutes)
- Durability and high level of residual chlorine
- Removal of algae that cause bad color, smell and taste in the water and the area around the pool
- Not creating pungent smell like other chemical products
- Eliminating pathogens in water (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, etc.)
- Eliminating resistant protozoa such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia in pool water
- No change in the physicochemical properties of water, such as pH, electrical conductivity and minerals in pool water
- Non-decomposition of the solution and the reduction of the effective substance after production and non-creation of toxic compounds such as perchlorate, which exist when using bleach.
